VETERINARY MEDICINE FOR BACK COUNTRY HORSEMEN

1996 Edition

Introduction

The care of our saddle and pack stock starts long before the back country trip.  Stock should be vaccinated against sleeping sickness, tetanus and influenza along with worming and dental care as indicated.  Adequate physical condition and exercise or training may require weeks or months of preparation.  Stock should be trimmed or shod well in advance of a trip.  The old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is certainly true in the back country.

Responsible care of saddle and pack stock includes the preparation and planning for conditions often encountered in the back country.  Common sense and education along with a minimum amount of medication and supplies will help make the trip more enjoyable for all.
