2006 Education Highlights

Wilderness Riders

  1. Communication updates with Yahoo group. This will serve as a discussion group and an online informational source. Pete has started this group and is administering the website.

  2. 2 more steering committee members and 2 more alternates were selected at the WR Rendezvous Roundup. Member’s names were drawn from a hat. Dennis Serpa, and Bob Pfaff were drawn first.

  3. Barb Miranda retired her position as of April 1st. We are awaiting word on a replacement in the near future.

Master’s Stock Course

There was interest in pursuing a Master Educator Stock Course in California. Options and opportunities will be explored. Jo Johnson and Ken Graves agreed to help research the near term choices.

Computer Based Reporting

We can now use Microsoft Excel to compile Volunteer Hours and Education Summary Reports. It is now possible to automatically tabulate volunteer hours and link forms to streamline the reporting process. An updated spreadsheet version of the Education Summary Sheet was approved by the Education Committee and subsequently, the Board of Directors.

New Educational Fliers

New fliers were approved by both the Education Committee and Board of Directors at the Rendezvous meetings:

  1. Educational Program Overview: This is a summary listing of all the publications of the BCHC Education Committee.

  2. Hellooo Camp! - A common sense guide to selecting a campsite and use of fire. Redwood Unit President, Chip Cannon started the first draft. The Education Steering Committee worked together to format, edit and add simple graphics to match other BCHC publications. Thanks to all who contributed to this great new flier.

  3. Next Flier Idea: Trail Ride Rules and Lost Rider Plan This subject is still under research and development by the High Country and Top of the State Units. Look for a draft version in the fall of 2006.

Officer Training

Three January classes were held in 2006: San Gorgonio Pass Unit hosted a session in the south; San Joaquin Sierra offered training in the central section of the state, and Shasta Trinity hosted a session in the north. A two hour refresher course was also held at the Rendezvous.

The Rendezvous recap was helpful to discuss our new computerized report formats. There were more questions than we had time to answer. Please feel free to email any questions that may arise .

Jo Johnson of the San Joaquin Sierra Unit has agreed to coordinate the Officer Training events for 2007. She is off to great start on next year’s events by securing host units in three regions of the state. Look for announcements on locations in future editions of the Backcountry News. Thanks to the San Gorgonio Pass, San Joaquin Sierra, Shasta Trinity and Top of the State Units for offering to help again next year.

Education Hours Summary

Fewer than half the Units submitted hours for consideration of our Education Awards, but the quality of submissions was very high. The award for Outstanding Individual went to Dave Moser of the Mid-Valley Unit. Dave has been a consistent contributor to education of BCHC Gentle Use principles for several years, and last year was no exception. Congratulations to Dave for all the hard work.

The Education Award for Outstanding Unit went to San Joaquin Sierra. They documented presentations to a wide variety of audiences. Several unit members were involved in the presentations. Thanks to all, and congratulations are well deserved.

Rendezvous Educational Programs

  1. Gentle Use Programs Six presentations qualified as Gentle Use Core classes and were offered twice each during the weekend. Sixteen other classes qualified for Gentle Use points; most offered a repeat session.

  2. Kids Program One class on Casting Animal Tracks was offered for children.

  3. Officer’s Training Refresher at Rendezvous (details above).

  4. Pins and Personnel A new spreadsheet and more helpers simplified this task this year. We are likely to award our first Silver Rider Pins in 2006!
Thanks to everyone who helped by hosting classes and introducing speakers. I really could not have done it without your help. Thank You!!!
